Overview
Our Regenerative Organic Certified® Nettle seeds from Gaia Herbs® grow into a vigorous, perennial herb with serrated green leaves and a rich, earthy flavor. Valued for centuries for its nutritional and wellness benefits, Nettle supports circulation, joint health, and overall vitality. Its flowers attract pollinators, and its leaves have long been used to promote wellness and support kidneys and joints.
Conditions
Nettle thrives in partial to full sun and prefers rich, well-drained soil that retains moisture. It tolerates a variety of soil types but grows best in fertile, organic matter–rich soil.
Planting
Cold stratify* 2–4 weeks, and then plant indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost. Press 2–3 seeds into the soil surface of each starter pot. Thin to the one strongest per pot, and transition outside (harden) 7 days before transplanting outdoors into a raised soil bed, leaving 2" of pot exposed.
*Cold stratify: place seeds in the fridge in a moist, folded paper towel before planting.
Care
Once established, Nettle is low-maintenance and fast-growing. Water during dry periods, thin crowded plants to improve airflow, and prune to manage size if needed.
Pests and Disease
Nettle is naturally resilient, with few pest or disease issues. Occasional aphids or fungal spots may appear, but good spacing, airflow, and organic treatments keep plants healthy—here’s a link to our favorite homemade insecticidal soap recipe for plants! Proper drainage and avoiding overwatering also help prevent root rot.
Harvest
Harvest young leaves in spring or early summer for teas, soups, or herbal remedies. Mature leaves can also be used after cooking or drying, and the seeds can be collected in late summer for culinary or medicinal uses.
